Como Hit Nine, Real Madrid Leave It Late: Champions League Wednesday Roundup

Wednesday night in the Champions League delivered one of the most dramatic evenings of the 2026-27 season so far. Debutants Como scored nine goals in France, Real Madrid needed a stoppage-time stunner to keep their perfect record alive, and Liverpool lost their first European game of the season in Istanbul. Three of the four headline matches finished 3-2, and by the end of the night only two clubs in the whole competition still held a 100 percent record: Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Nine league-phase fixtures were played on Wednesday, completing Matchday 4. Tuesday had already produced its own drama, with Manchester United coming from behind to beat Roma 3-2, PSG hitting six at Villarreal and Barcelona beating Aston Villa 3-0, but Wednesday somehow topped it. Here is the full story of the night.

Como 9-1 Lens: History Equalled in France

The result of the night, and one of the most remarkable scorelines in Champions League history, came at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, where Como thrashed Lens 9-1. The Italian side's nine goals equalled the most ever scored by one team in a single Champions League match, and the eight-goal winning margin matched the competition's biggest.

Como wasted no time. Anastasios Douvikas opened the scoring after just seven minutes, added a second before half-time, and completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark. In between, Nico Paz made it 3-0, Lucas Da Cunha struck early in the second half, and Marc Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali and Martin Baturina all joined the scoring as the visitors raced to 8-1. Ruben Aguilar's 65th-minute strike was the only reply Lens could manage all night.

The final word belonged to an 18-year-old. Debutant Matteo Papaccioli scored Como's ninth goal in stoppage time, a moment that will live long in the memory of everyone connected with the club. It was a night that turned a European away trip into a history lesson: Como, in only their first Champions League campaign, now sit fourth in the league-phase standings with nine points, while Lens dropped out of the qualifying places to 33rd.

For context, the previous record for goals by one team in a match was set when Bayern Munich beat Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in 2024, while the biggest winning margins before Wednesday were the 8-0 wins recorded by Liverpool against Besiktas in 2007 and Real Madrid against Malmo in 2015. Como now stand alongside them all.

AEK Athens 2-3 Real Madrid: Valverde's Stoppage-Time Stunner

If Como provided the shock, Real Madrid provided the theatre. The 15-time European champions twice went behind at AEK Athens and twice fought back, before Federico Valverde smashed a long-range winner into the top corner in the second minute of stoppage time to seal a 3-2 victory.

Aboubakary Koita gave the hosts the lead in the 12th minute, and Jude Bellingham equalised with a backheel flick in the 32nd. Stavros Pilios restored AEK's advantage in the 75th minute, only for Kylian Mbappe to level within three minutes. Then Valverde, who had been quiet for much of the evening, produced the moment of the night to keep Madrid's perfect start intact.

It is becoming a habit. Madrid also needed a late rally to beat Roma 4-3 last month, scoring three goals in the final 10 minutes, including a 90th-minute winner from Antonio Rudiger. According to reports from the night, Jose Mourinho's side have now scored five match-winning goals in the final five minutes of games this season. AEK's evening ended in further frustration when Koita, who had both scored and assisted, was sent off after the final whistle for continued protests towards the referee.

The win leaves Real Madrid second in the standings with four wins from four, behind PSG only on goal difference. AEK sit 29th with three points from four games.

Fenerbahce 3-2 Liverpool: Kuyt's Men End the Reds' Perfect Start

Liverpool's perfect Champions League start is over, and it was ended by one of their own. Former Reds striker Dirk Kuyt, serving as Fenerbahce's interim manager, oversaw a famous 3-2 win in Istanbul that handed Liverpool their first defeat of the league phase.

The pattern of the game was cruel for the visitors. Teenager Trey Nyoni put Liverpool ahead in the 25th minute, only for former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood to level within four minutes with a deflected effort. Substitute Alexander Isak restored Liverpool's lead in the 69th minute, and again the advantage lasted barely four minutes before Archie Brown equalised. Then Vedat Muriqi headed home the winner in the 79th minute to send the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium into pandemonium.

It was Liverpool's second defeat in a row in all competitions, following Sunday's Premier League loss to Arsenal, and a reminder that even the strongest starts can unravel quickly in this competition. For Fenerbahce, it was a first victory of this season's league phase, and a night their supporters will not forget in a hurry.

RB Leipzig 2-3 Manchester City: Haaland Does It Again

Manchester City also needed to dig deep, twice blowing the lead before Erling Haaland settled a 3-2 win at RB Leipzig. An own goal from Carlos Lukeba and a header from Enzo Fernandez put City ahead on each occasion, with Ridle Baku and Antonio Nusa drawing Leipzig level both times.

Haaland's 78th-minute winner extended his remarkable record against the German side: the Norwegian has now scored 13 times in nine appearances against Leipzig. The victory keeps City inside the top eight, with nine points leaving them seventh in the table, while Leipzig sit 29th with three points.

Arsenal, Dortmund, Porto, Club Brugge and Viking All Win

Arsenal extended their unbeaten start to the league phase with a 2-1 away win at Slavia Prague. Noni Madueke's early goal and a brilliant Viktor Gyokeres finish from a tight angle just before half-time put the Gunners in control, and although Wiktor Nowak pulled one back in the 90th minute, Arsenal held on. A third win from four matches lifts them to third in the standings, while Slavia's search for a first win continues in 34th place.

The Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona on a matchday

Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park, where 18-year-old Konstantinos Karetsas scored his first Champions League goal to settle the game with 20 minutes to play. Fabio Silva had given the hosts the lead early in the second half before substitute Aitor Ruibal equalised within five minutes of his introduction. Dortmund created 2.58 expected goals to Betis' 0.82 and were good value for a win that lifts them to 12th in the table.

Porto secured their first win of the league phase in style, beating Napoli 4-1 at the Estadio do Dragao. Jan Bednarek's early opener was cancelled out by Scott McTominay late in the first half, but second-half goals from Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and a Samu Aghehowa penalty sealed the points, with Rafa Marin sent off late for the visitors. Napoli have now lost three of their four league-phase fixtures and sit 27th, while Porto move up to 26th.

Club Brugge continued their superb start with a 2-1 away win at PSV Eindhoven. Goals from Nicolo Tresoldi and Carlos Forbs either side of Kodai Sano's equaliser gave the Belgians the points, helped hugely by goalkeeper Yann Sommer's seven saves. The win lifts Club Brugge to ninth in the table, only outside the top eight on goal difference, while PSV fall to 24th.

Finally, Viking won their first-ever Champions League match, beating Sabah 4-1 at Lyse Arena in Stavanger. The visitors took an early lead through Patrick Orphe M'Bina, but Erik Botheim's 27th-minute equaliser and second-half goals from Zlatko Tripic, Henrik Falchener and Botheim again sealed a historic night for the Norwegian side. The win lifts Viking to 22nd with four points, while Sabah drop to 31st with three.

What It Means for the Table

After four rounds, the picture at the top is starting to take shape. PSG and Real Madrid are the only clubs with four wins from four, with the French champions ahead on goal difference after Tuesday's 6-0 demolition of Villarreal. Arsenal sit third with three wins, and Como's nine-goal night has lifted the debutants to fourth, also on nine points. Manchester City are seventh on nine points, and Club Brugge sit ninth, just outside the top eight on goal difference.

At the other end, the pressure is building. Napoli have lost three of four and sit 27th, Slavia Prague are still searching for a first win in 34th, and Lens have dropped out of the qualifying places entirely after the Como defeat. With the league phase now at its halfway point, every point from here carries extra weight, and the teams at the bottom know that one more bad night could leave them with too much to do.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will need a response. Back-to-back defeats in all competitions, and a first European loss of the season, have given their critics something to talk about for the first time this campaign. The good news for the Reds is that they remain well placed in the table, but the manner of the defeat in Istanbul, twice throwing away a lead, will concern their manager more than the result itself.

Meanwhile in Dhaka: Pakistan vs India Under Way

Closer to home, the biggest match of the day for Pakistani fans kicked off at 2:30pm PKT today, as Pakistan took on India in their SAFF Championship 2026 Group B opener at the National Stadium in Dhaka. It is Pakistan's first senior meeting with India since the 2023 SAFF Championship, and the first test of head coach Nolberto Solano's side after their encouraging ASEAN Cup campaign.

At the time of writing, with the match still in progress, India had taken an early 2-0 lead inside the opening 25 minutes. Whatever the final score, the result and the reaction will be covered in full in tonight's update on Cric Sports Daily, along with what it means for Pakistan's hopes of reaching the semi-finals in Dhaka. Pakistan's next group game is against the Maldives on November 8.

The Night in One Line

Como made history, Real Madrid refused to lose, Liverpool found out how quickly a perfect start can end, and Haaland kept doing what Haaland does. Matchday 4 will be remembered as the night a debutant club scored nine goals in the Champions League, and as the night the league-phase table started to look very interesting indeed. Matchday 5 arrives on November 24 and 25, with Real Madrid hosting PSV Eindhoven among the headline fixtures.
