Champions League: Cunha Saves United, PSG Hit Six

Aerial view of the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona under the lights

Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League had a bit of everything: a comeback that saved a manager, a record-breaking blitz, a teenage record, and a statement win in Madrid. Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford, Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Villarreal 6-0 in Spain after scoring four times in just over 16 minutes, and Barcelona ended Aston Villa's perfect start with a 3-0 win at Camp Nou. Here is the full Matchday 4 round-up, and what Wednesday night has in store.

United 3-2 Roma: Cunha's eight minutes of madness

It looked like another miserable European night for Manchester United. Roma led 2-0 inside the first 18 minutes at Old Trafford, Matias Soule sweeping home after 11 minutes before Donyell Malen converted a penalty. The home fans had already made their feelings known before kick-off, releasing green and gold balloons in United's original colours and throwing tennis balls onto the pitch in protest during the first half.

The comeback started in the 58th minute, and it needed a second attempt. Bruno Fernandes saw his first penalty saved by Roma's third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vasquez, but the kick was ordered to be retaken because a Roma player had encroached, and the United captain buried the second effort. Bryan Mbeumo then struck both posts with one shot, and it felt like the night might still end in frustration.

Then came Matheus Cunha. In the 83rd minute, Leonardo Balerdi missed his clearance from a Fernandes cross and Cunha finished from close range to make it 2-2. Three minutes later, substitute Shea Lacey threaded a pass through and Cunha lashed home at the near post to complete the turnaround. His celebration, shirt off and into the crowd, earned him a booking, and a late challenge in stoppage time brought a second yellow card, so the hero finished the night off the pitch. It hardly mattered. The win ended United's nine-match winless run, their first victory in 54 days, and lifted Michael Carrick's side to 17th in the league phase on six points. Roma, who did not manage a single shot after half-time, stay 19th on four points.

PSG 6-0 Villarreal: the fastest four goals in history

If United's win was about drama, PSG's was about destruction. The defending champions were 4-0 up inside 17 minutes at the Estadio de la Ceramica, and the clock told the story: four goals in 16 minutes and two seconds, the fastest any team has ever scored four in a Champions League match. The previous record, Real Madrid's 20-minute burst against Dinamo Zagreb in November 2011, had stood for almost 15 years.

Joao Neves opened the scoring from close range at a corner, Desire Doue and Senny Mayulu punished sloppy Villarreal defending, and Fabian Ruiz finished a fine half-volley to complete the record burst. Ruiz added a second early in the second half, and 17-year-old David Boly scored his first Champions League goal late on. It was PSG's biggest away win in European competition, their fourth win from four, and they now have 20 goals from the opening four rounds. They sit top of the standings on 12 points. Villarreal, who finished third in La Liga last season, remain on three points in 29th place.

Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa: Yamal passes Mbappe

Barcelona ended Aston Villa's perfect start to the competition with a comfortable 3-0 win at a rain-soaked Camp Nou, and the night belonged to Lamine Yamal. The teenager pounced on a loose pass inside the Villa box after just seven minutes, and in doing so scored his 14th Champions League goal as a teenager, passing the record of 13 previously held by Kylian Mbappe.

Villa, to their credit, created the clearer openings before half-time, but Barcelona killed the game after the break. Raphinha finished from Fermin Lopez's pass seven minutes into the second half, his shot deflecting off Victor Lindelof, and then converted Joao Cancelo's superb outside-of-the-boot cross in the 64th minute. It was Barcelona's first clean sheet of this season's competition, and it kept them among the group of six teams on nine points chasing PSG at the top. Villa, despite the defeat, are also on nine points, and Unai Emery's side will see this as a learning night rather than a crisis.

Bayern 2-0 Atletico: steel in Madrid

Bayern Munich produced the night's most controlled performance, winning 2-0 at Atletico Madrid in the stadium that will host this season's final. Atletico arrived on a nine-game unbeaten run, but they finished the first half without a shot on target against a compact Bayern defence. Lennart Karl broke the deadlock in the 54th minute after dispossessing Robin Le Normand, and Konrad Laimer finished clinically in the 74th minute from Harry Kane's pass.

Bayern were without manager Vincent Kompany, who is recovering after collapsing at training, and assistant Aaron Danks praised the collective effort afterwards. The win mattered: Bayern had drawn 2-2 with Arsenal and 3-3 with Viking in their previous two European matches, and they remain the only team in Europe's top five leagues still unbeaten in all competitions this season. Atletico, who have now taken just four points from four matches, face a fight to reach the knockout rounds, although goalkeeper Jan Oblak at least had a personal milestone, making his 553rd appearance for the club to draw level with legend Adelardo Rodriguez in second place on the all-time list.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night

Inter Milan revived their campaign with a 3-0 win at Feyenoord, Yann Bisseck, Pio Esposito and Piotr Zielinski scoring at De Kuip. The game was briefly halted for two minutes late on when flares thrown from outside the stadium landed on the roof and drifted onto the pitch, but play resumed safely. Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2-0 thanks to two goals from Aleksey Batrakov, Sporting CP edged Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0, LASK claimed only their second-ever Champions League win by thrashing Slovan Bratislava 4-0, and Bodo/Glimt drew 0-0 with Lille.

Before kick-off, stadiums across Europe fell silent in memory of Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel, who died earlier on Tuesday, a reminder of perspective on a night of high drama.

What the table looks like now

PSG are the clear leaders on 12 points from four matches, the only team with a perfect record. Behind them, a group of six teams sit on nine points, including Barcelona and Aston Villa. United's comeback moved them up to 17th on six points, while Roma are 19th on four. With four rounds still to play after this week, the race for the top eight, and direct qualification for the last 16, is wide open, and the teams in the middle of the table know that one bad week can undo months of work.

Wednesday night: Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal and City in action

Matchday 4 continues on Wednesday night with nine more fixtures, and the headline names all play. Real Madrid travel to AEK Athens and Liverpool visit Fenerbahce in the early games, both kicking off at 6:45pm CET, which is 10:45pm PKT. Later, at 9:00pm CET (1:00am PKT on Thursday), Manchester City visit RB Leipzig and Arsenal travel to Slavia Prague, while Borussia Dortmund host Real Betis and Porto face Napoli.

Real Madrid and Liverpool both arrive aiming to protect perfect starts to the league phase, while Arsenal, who drew 2-2 with Bayern last time out, will expect to win in Prague. For Pakistani fans, the early games are perfectly timed for a late evening watch, while the late games are strictly for the night owls. After Tuesday's drama, Wednesday has a lot to live up to, but if this season has taught us anything, it is that the Champions League rarely disappoints.
