Premier League: Chelsea Stun United, City Fall to Brighton
Saturday, 31 October 2026, delivered one of the most dramatic days of the Premier League season so far. Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, Brighton stunned leaders Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad, and Tottenham made it three straight wins with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. By the end of the night, the title race had a completely new shape, and Sunday's huge clash between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield now carries even more weight.
For Pakistani football fans, who follow the Premier League in huge numbers, it was a perfect Saturday of drama: a red card and a penalty at the Bridge, a shock at the home of the champions-elect, and a London derby win for Spurs. Here is everything that happened on Matchday 9, what it means for the table, and what to watch for when Liverpool host Arsenal tonight at 9:30pm PKT.

Two fixtures remain in Matchday 9: Liverpool vs Arsenal on Sunday evening, and Newcastle United vs Everton on Monday night. Whatever happens at Anfield, the weekend has already changed the mood of the season.
Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United: Rogers stars, Martinez sees red
The early kick-off at Stamford Bridge was goalless at half-time, but it exploded into life after the break. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a superb individual goal, driving from midfield, leaving Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire behind, and dinking a delicate finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Things then went badly wrong for United. Martinez, already booked for a foul on Rogers, was shown a second yellow card in the 63rd minute after a VAR review of his challenge on Wesley Fofana at a corner. Referee Peter Bankes pointed to the penalty spot, and Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute, with Lammens getting a hand to the ball but unable to keep it out. The goal was Palmer's 50th in the Premier League.
Chelsea saw the game out comfortably against ten men to move up to fourth place on 16 points. United, meanwhile, are now winless in nine matches in all competitions and sit 17th in the table on just seven points, with head coach Michael Carrick under enormous pressure. After the defeat, Carrick was asked whether he would still be in charge for United's next match against Roma, and answered simply: yes.
The win also continued Chelsea's strong home form and showed why Rogers is becoming one of the most dangerous attacking players in the league. His run for the opener, straight through the heart of the United defence, will be replayed all week.
Manchester City 0-1 Brighton: Ayari stuns the leaders
The shock of the weekend came at the Etihad, where Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 thanks to Yasin Ayari's first-half strike. City dominated possession and pushed hard for an equaliser, with penalty appeals reviewed, but Brighton's disciplined, compact performance earned them a famous away win.
The result ended City's perfect start to the league season in terms of points dropped, and it keeps the title race wide open. City still top the table on 21 points from nine games, but Arsenal, also on 21 points with a game in hand, can go top outright by winning at Anfield on Sunday. Brighton, meanwhile, climb to third on 19 points, with the best goal difference in the league at plus 17.
For City, it is a warning that no lead is safe this season. Brighton have now beaten the champions at their own ground, and the chasing pack will smell blood. City's next test does not get any easier, with a trip to Arsenal on the horizon.
Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace: Spurs win three in a row
Tottenham continued their fine run with a 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace in the London derby. Spurs were helped by an early sending-off for Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, and they made the advantage count. Archie Gray opened the scoring from a corner, and Jan Paul van Hecke added the second after the break, heading home to seal a third straight league victory and another clean sheet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs now sit eighth on 12 points, firmly in the mix for the European places, while Palace drop to 18th on seven points. For Tottenham, the story of the last few weeks has been control: they are winning games without drama, defending well, and taking their chances when they come.
Elsewhere on Saturday: Brentford, Coventry, Bournemouth and more
Brentford marked their 100th Premier League match at the Gtech Community Stadium with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. An own goal gave the Bees a half-time lead before Igor Thiago sealed the win late on, lifting Brentford to sixth on 14 points. Forest, by contrast, are 19th on six points and in real trouble.
Coventry City continued their impressive return to the top flight with a 3-1 win over Sunderland. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the lead twenty minutes later with his first Premier League goal of the season, and Jack Rudoni made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute. Sunderland pulled one back through Enzo Le Fee's penalty in the 67th minute, but a late red card for Omar Alderete ended their hopes of a comeback. Coventry climb to 16th on nine points; Sunderland are bottom on five.
AFC Bournemouth beat Leeds United 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium to extend their strong run, while Hull City and Ipswich Town shared the points in a 2-2 draw. Julio Enciso's stunning long-range strike rescued a point for Ipswich after Hull had come from behind through Tim Iroegbunam and Oli McBurnie. Aston Villa and Fulham drew 1-1 in the day's other fixture, leaving both sides on 12 and nine points respectively.
What the table looks like now
| Position | Team | Played | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manchester City | 9 | 21 |
| 2 | Arsenal | 8 | 21 |
| 3 | Brighton & Hove Albion | 9 | 19 |
| 4 | Chelsea | 9 | 16 |
| 5 | Liverpool | 8 | 15 |
| 6 | Brentford | 9 | 14 |
| 17 | Manchester United | 9 | 7 |
| 20 | Sunderland | 9 | 5 |
The headline is simple: City and Arsenal are level at the top, Brighton are just two points behind, and Liverpool can join the party. If Liverpool beat Arsenal at Anfield, they will move to 18 points and within three points of the summit. If Arsenal win, they will go top on 24 points with a game still to play in hand over City. A draw keeps Arsenal level with City and lifts Liverpool to 16 points.
Tonight: Liverpool vs Arsenal at Anfield, 9:30pm PKT
Sunday's match is the biggest of the weekend. Liverpool, fifth on 15 points and improving under Andoni Iraola with three wins in their last five league games, host defending champions Arsenal at Anfield. Kick-off is at 4:30pm GMT, which is 9:30pm Pakistan time.
Arsenal arrive with problems out wide. Bukayo Saka is out with a thigh injury, Christos Tzolis is also out, and 16-year-old Max Dowman is suspended after his sending-off in the League Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town in midweek, a result that already heaped pressure on Mikel Arteta's side. Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori and Noni Madueke are all doubts or just returning to training, though Arteta has said the first two trained and should be available if all goes well.
Liverpool have their own doubts. Dominik Szoboszlai, the reigning Player of the Season, has managed only 32 minutes since the last international break because of a hamstring injury, while summer signing Victor Munoz has a knee problem. Iraola said both players have a chance of featuring, but neither is certain. Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike are all out.
History favours the hosts. Arsenal have not won at Anfield in 14 years, picking up just five points from their last 13 league visits there, and the last meeting between the sides finished 0-0 in January 2026. Liverpool's predicted line-up features Alisson in goal, Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet at centre-back, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in midfield, Florian Wirtz pulling the strings, and Alexander Isak leading the line.
For Pakistani fans, this is the late-night fixture worth staying up for. A Liverpool win drags them right back into the title race; an Arsenal win sends the champions top and answers their critics after the Fleetwood shock. Either way, after Saturday's drama, Matchday 9 has already delivered, and Anfield gets the final word.
The bigger picture
Three storylines will dominate the week ahead. First, can Manchester City respond to their first defeat, or has Brighton exposed a weakness others can copy? Second, how long can Michael Carrick survive at Manchester United, with the club 17th and winless in nine? And third, who leaves Anfield on Sunday night with the title race in their hands?
One thing is certain: the Premier League in 2026-27 is not a procession. After nine matchdays, two points separate the top three, the champions can be caught, and a team that started the season in the bottom half, Brighton, are genuine contenders. That is exactly why this league remains the most watched in Pakistan and around the world.
